The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to resolving the challenges associated with livestock transportation in Nigeria, including advancing railway systems as a sustainable solution to ease road congestion, reduce transportation costs, and minimise losses.
Speaking on Wednesday 8th January 2025, during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDF) to his office, the Minister expressed gratitude for their support and collaboration while assuring them of the Ministry’s resolve to implement sustainable solutions.
Mukhtar acknowledged the sector’s vital role in ensuring food security, economic growth, and rural development, stressing that the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development underscores the government’s recognition of the livestock industry as a key driver of the agricultural sector.
“You are the best uniting factor for this country between the north and the south,” he noted. “The food grown in the north cannot be consumed there alone. It must find its way to the south, and this sector ensures that happens.”
The Minister acknowledged stakeholder concerns about illegal levies and multiple taxation, pledging decisive action. “We are conducting in-depth studies to address illegal levies at checkpoints, which increase costs for cattle traders and consumers alike. A legitimate checkpoint is acceptable, but we must eliminate illegal ones,” he stated.
“We are committed to promoting a thriving and resilient livestock industry by addressing the infrastructural, regulatory, and security challenges that have long hindered progress in this sector,” Mukhtar, reiterated, assuring stakeholders that their input would guide the formulation of policies and regulations.
In addition, he addressed the need for better cattle health management and modernised farming practices. “Vaccination and proper record-keeping are crucial for export compliance. Data is vital for planning and ensuring sustainable growth. We will also encourage the cultivation of special grasses for better animal nutrition,” he said.
The Minister also outlined measures to attract foreign investors, referencing his recent visit to Brazil. “Brazilian investors are eager to set up meat processing plants in Nigeria. This is an opportunity for us to modernise and meet international standards. Food has no alternative; everyone must eat. That’s why food security is the central pillar of this administration,” he noted.
During the meeting, the leadership of the AUFCDF, led by its National President, Mohammed Tahir, expressed deep appreciation for the Federal Government’s foresight in establishing the Ministry of Livestock Development. They also congratulated the Minister on his well-deserved appointment.
The union highlighted several pressing challenges faced by its members, including poor road infrastructure that leads to delays, spoilage of goods, and increased costs; insecurity on highways caused by banditry, kidnapping, illegal checkpoints, and extortion; and the financial burden of multiple taxation and illegal levies.
In addition, transit delays caused by restrictions on heavy trucks, quarantine checkpoints, and unrest have resulted in significant losses, including the spoilage of perishable goods and the death of livestock.
The Minister assured the union of the government’s determination to address these issues through strategic interventions. He outlined plans to prioritize the development of Abattoirs for meat processing and cold- chain transportation while exploring alternative transportation systems like railways for the movement of livestock and foodstuff.
Enhanced security measures will be deployed to dismantle illegal checkpoints, ensure the safety of transporters and goods, and foster collaboration with state governments to harmonise regulations and eliminate multiple taxations.
